Topic Sentence: Main Idea & Controlling Idea

Topic Sentence A topic sentence expresses the main idea of a paragraph and is the most general statement of the paragraph. Additionally, topic sentences contain both the main idea and the controlling idea.  -The main idea is a complete sentence that includes the topic and what the writer wants to prove or discuss. Must be supported by details. -The controlling idea is the point the writer makes about the topic. It gives a direction to the paragraph. Examples:   " My brothers are artistic. " " English teachers work hard. " " Anything can happen at a county fair. " During an interactive session, we went through subtopics of the 'basic composition' of paragraphs. That is, focusing on identifying and analyzing the main idea and the controlling idea of a paragraph. We were engaged in activities to help widen our understanding of main ideas and controlling ideas. Moreover, how they may present themselves in a paragraph. Though this topic was not ...

My Perspective: The Ugly Truth about Beauty by Dave Barry

The writer was able to grab my attention with his comical and very accurate representation of events that could occur at any point in life. People generally are self-conscious about their appearance, the majority possibly being the female population. The writing supports my previous statement as it mentions how one should be cautious of their response to how a woman may look or "collapse on the floor with some kind of fatal seizure," quite dramatic if you ask me.  I disagree that one may never find the correct answer to  "How do I look?" . What is true is the writers' statement about how most men perceive themselves as looking the same as "in seventh grade" or as "irresistible stud muffins" regardless of whatever changes the body may go through.  Ultimately, what society perceives to be feminine is different from what they perceive as masculine. Therefore, women try to fit the expectations and beliefs of how society thinks they should look ...

The Purpose of an Introduction

What is the Purpose of an introduction? An introduction is used in various forms of writing. As the first paragraph in an essay, its main focus is to make the readers eager to read more. The introduction as we all know enables readers to have a clear and concise idea of what is being covered in the initial writing. Is the introduction the most important part of an essay? Though opinions may vary. I would consider the introductory piece to be the most important part of an essay. It is used to sell the writer's topic and general ideas to the readers. Additionally, it is the key component that captures the audience's attention to continue reading. once a road map of relevant points and purposes are provided. Some of the elements used when writing an essay. An attention grabber component. (eg. A startling statement, quotation & descriptive image) The background context. The purpose or problem being addressed. The thesis statement. The main points How I would begin an introduc...

Brainstorming

Brainstorming: Crisis During class, we were given a brainstorming task. These are the words that came to mind when I thought of the word "Crisis"; Hurricane  Abuse Heatwave Unemployment Child abandonment Financial Problems Theft/ Robbery Death Volcanic eruption Flood Tornado Pollution Chemical Contamination Fires Wild Fires Earthquake Suicide Self Harm Pandemic Poverty After I finished jotting down these words, I began an elimination process of repetitive words and asked myself if they could identify as a crisis. Afterward, we then had to group those words into categories. This is where I realized certain words fell into more than one category. Natural Disasters : Hurricane, Heatwave, Volcanic eruption, Flood, Tornado, Wildfires, Earthquake. Manmade Disasters : Pollution, Chemical contamination, Fires. Personal Situations/ Mental Health Issues : Abuse, Unemployment...

My Relationship with Writing

I was introduced to writing at the primary education level. However, I only began to get better at my tertiary level. Though, I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with writing. My expectations for writing are to learn how to vocalize my ideas and opinions to relay them to individuals and possibly give them an engaging read. My weaknesses in writing would have to be punctuating my work, ending an essay, and summarizing my work to a word limit. My strength would have to be the number of ideas I would have when it comes to writing though it can also be my weakness. Additionally, I enjoy reading books that hold interest and someday hope to write at least one book that people would be inspired by or get a good read.
